Culminating Activity
Your group is going to create a new, unheard, of
culture. All the information that you will be required to supply is listed
below. Use this page as a guide to help you invent information about the
culture. Write your report in a notebook or on separate sheets of paper with at
least one page for each topic. (Topics are in bold print.) Write the topic at
the top of each page; include pictures and diagrams.
Name your culture. It can
be a word spelled backwards, a slang term with a prefix or suffix added, or a
newly-invented word.
1. Time.
Choose a time for your culture; it could be past, present, or future. Describe
the geographic features of the area (desert, mountain, rivers, etc.) Write a
physical description of the people; be sure to include drawings or pictures of
them.
2. Values/Rules.
Make a list of their values and the rules by which they conducted their lives.
Tell what was most important to these people (family life, money, intelligence,
etc.).
3. Technology. Tell
about the advances they made in technology; draw pictures of any new devices. Also
describe and draw pictures of their methods of transportation.
4. Foods
Fashion/Shelter.
Write a typical daily menu; explain how most foods were produced (test tubes;
recycled foods; etc.). Draw pictures of the latest fashion craze for both men
and women. Tell about the living conditions and describe a typical home.
5.
Government. Choose a form of government for the culture (monarchy,
dictatorship, etc.) and tell how officials are chosen. Explain how laws were
enforced; write some important laws established by the culture.
6. Marriage/Family. Explain how marriage partners
were chosen. Describe the typical family. Tell about the child-rearing
practices of the time. (Perhaps children were sent to a co-op until they were
school-age.)
7. Religious Beliefs.
Describe any religious beliefs and practices these people held. Write step-by
step
directions explaining how they buried their dead.
8. Alphabet/Language.
Create an alphabet and a language for the culture. Also devise a number system.
9. Art
Music/Dance.
Tell what kind of art was popular then (little use of color; abstracts; etc.).
Describe the music that was popular; tell about the latest dance craze; list some
books that were on the best-seller list.
10. Games/Leisure.
Make up a game that the children liked to play. Describe the national sport.
Tell how people used their leisure time.
